 In football, on a kickoff or punt, the initial thought is that the kicking team simply wants to kick the ball as far as they can. Sometimes though, this can be detrimental because a big part of protecting against a good return is that the other 10 guys on the kicking team's side, referred to as his coverage, may be most effective at a shorter distance than the kicker's maximum range because you want to tackle the receiver the instant he catches the ball. So if a kicker simply kicks it as far as he can, he may actually be kicking it further than the rest of his team can account for because the receiver may be able to catch the ball and have room to work with before anyone on the kicking team can reach him. This is called outkicking his coverage. As for how to two actually relate to each other, the best rationale I can come up with is that when someone outkicks their coverage in football, they've theoretically done a good thing too well and accidentally actually shot themselves in the foot. When it comes to relationships, there are plenty of people who hang on to a classical mindset that if one partner is dramatically more physically attractive than the other, they're more likely to "wake up" or "realize it" or cheat on them when a more physically attractive option comes along.
